They had recently opened a new tap room and were expanding their bottled beer shop to a larger adjacent room. I shown Nigel (the owner) my work when I was purchasing some beer one day, he wanted a large piece of artwork (2 x 3 metres) which couldn't be missed when you entered the new shop.
This design is a homage to my love of hoppy beer and retro comics - it is based on the very first Godzilla comic by Marvel, with an added beer related twist.
An elaborated version of the Maison Du Biere Building with "BEER" wrote in Neon lights is featured within the design. The idea was to splice two very different worlds of industrial past of the Heritage Centre building with modern Tokyo neon sky scrapers.
Hopzilla was first penciled and inked by hand as a traditional comic book would be, and finally scanned, vectored and coloured digitally in Adobe Illustrator with a Wacom Cintiq Tablet, so it could be scaled to size for the banner, a version was then halftoned in photoshop to make suitable for screen printed t-shirts and art prints.
The Banner will be installed at Maison Du Biere Soon (Photographs to follow)
